JUNIOR NATIONAL LAW CONFERENCE 2022
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is pushing millions into poverty and jeopardizing their basic rights and a decent standard of living.
A downturn in the economy can have far-reaching adverse consequences on the Rule of Law and Governance of a Country. At its worst, the economic decline can result in a complete breakdown of Law and Order, but even prior to that, serious repercussions flow from growing financial hardships that have to be borne by citizens that perpetuate inequality and the ability of citizens to enjoy or vindicate their rights, be they public or private rights.Winston Churchill’s famous dictum, “Never let a good crisis go to waste,” could not be more apt for Sri Lanka in its current context. With every crisis comes an opportunity. For Sri Lanka, this pivotal moment is a chance to reset/change its development model towards green, resilient, and inclusive growth. It should update the social protection system and implement measures to ensure fair taxation, and policy-making, uphold the rights of people and combat corruption at the highest levels of government.
During the response phase of a crisis, the lawyer needs to have a seat at the table so that the legal, regulatory, compliance and policy implications of any piece of information can be fully absorbed. It is with this in mind that the Junior National Law Conference for the year 2022 will revolve around the theme of “Overcoming obstacles. Conquering Change.”
The Junior National Law Conference is a safe haven for young lawyers to share their ideas and mingle with like-minded peers. We hope that this year’s conference would open up the doors for a brighter future for the junior members of the legal profession to overcome obstacles and conquer change wholeheartedly.
